2024 Annual Report
2024 was a year in which most “regular” activities resumed in this post Covid era. Now Covid vaccines are becoming the norm for many along with flu shots. We had an active year with many other activities along with our monthly dinners. Our membership numbers increased this year and our lifetime membership is growing as well. Some members attend many of our monthly dinners while some participate only once or twice a year depending on the activity and the weather.
Our executive this year was the same as 2023. We worked well together and enjoyed planning our activities. Only three members of the executive are returning in 2025, Gale, Jean and myself. Thanks to Jean Libby, our Past President who also picked up the bulk of the Social Committee planning and who will take up the role of Director of the Dining Committee. Val is staying on a Newsletter (At a Glance) Coordinator but she has given up her role as Secretary to take on an executive position on the Senior Games (OSGA) executive. Robert Lavallée has “retired” after several years as treasurer. After many years of serving on the Club 55+ Executive, Denise has also given up her role as Membership Director to join the executive of the Senior Games. Lori has left to join the Women’s Golf executive as well as the OSGA executive.
Elsewhere in this report you will find a list of our dinners and activities and I thank the members of the outgoing executive for their dedication and commitment to provide good programming for our membership.
On November 23rd, the Greater Madawaska Township held the Township Showcase. Gale and Sue attended on behalf of the club. The intention was to show seniors what is available in Greater Madawaska. We both felt that the event was useful and we should attend next year. It was invaluable as we even signed up three (3) couples at this event!!
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge some special contributions. Gale worked very hard on a grant application and we received $5,000 to upgrade the garden at Barnet Park. Denise and Jean worked diligently with Renee Mask at the Township office on a grant application for a grant to use for improving services for seniors in our community. At the end of December 2024 and as we were writing this report, we had not yet received a response on the application status. We will continue to update you once we get any news.
Membership Report – Denise Lavallée
Membership at the end of December 2024 stands at 161 members including 27 lifetime members. In 2024, we welcomed 24 new members and 2 renewing members.
In Memoriam: Remembering those we lost in 2024. We said goodbye to former Club member Bert Morrow (November 30) and Club member Bruce Hutchinson (December 8). Rest in Peace Bruce and Bert. You are in our thoughts and in our hearts.
Social Committee Report
Debbie Murphy moved away last summer and Jean Libbey picked up the bulk of this roll with help from other executive members.
Hikes
The club enjoyed two fall hikes in 2024. The first vigorous hike at Calabogie Peaks was on October 18th. It was a beautiful fall day with a hike up the mountain to the Skywalk trail and then we continued on other trails. The group of sixteen elected to hike up the mountain rather than go to the Eagles Nest. With the assistance of an ATV, hikers who were needing assistance with either going up or down the mountain were provided with a lift. The group then met at the Brewery for lunch outdoors where the sun continued to shine. Our presence at the Brewery was captured on the CTV evening news.
The second hike, originally planned for November 22nd was postponed until the 29th November due to hunting season. Fifteen club members hiked to Morrow’s Lake. As with the first hike, plans changed on the fly with only the one location instead of it being a two part hike. That day too was perfect weather wise and the group went back to On the Rocks for lunch.
Both hikes were led by Rick Levitsky, with Val organizing the first hike and Susan Veale coordinating the 2nd hike.
Dining Committee Report – Lori Armour
2024 proved to be another busy year for monthly dinner meetings for the Calabogie 55+ club.
January – 33 members enjoyed salad and tacos from the Redneck Bistro. Card games were played before dinner.
February – 36 members enjoyed a select menu of Chicken Wings, Mac & Cheese and Salmon at Canthook’s Restaurant.
March – 27 members attended with a menu of pork schnitzel with mushrooms sauce and sides from Annette Charbonneau. Allison Fay entertained us with her sweet vocals.
April – 53 members attended Calabogie Highlands Golf Course for salads, chicken sandwich, burger or fish & chips. Val Trotter led us in some line dancing.
May – 8 members attended Karra’s Way in Renfrew to enjoy various Greek foods.
June – 42 members enjoyed Quesadillas from the Redneck Bistro. We were entertained by the sounds of the SALC band with Carole Mundy that played a great selection of 50’s, 60’s and 70’s music.
July – 47 members attended Barnet Park for Renfrew Shawarma family platters. We followed up playing Bingo with prizes.
August – 41 members enjoyed a BBQ with hamburgers/hotdogs, salads and homemade pie at Barnet Park catered by Cindy Wright and Nancy Baker. Beach Party was the theme with outdoor games.
September – 27 members enjoyed ham and scalloped potatoes from Charbonneau’s at Calabogie Community Centre.
October – 56 members attended our pizza and caesar salad dinner from Calabogie Pizzeria. The dinner is followed by our Annual General Meeting and a Disco themed party with music and costumes.
November – We had 61 orders for Chinese food from Shanloon’s Chinese restaurant in Renfrew for our November dinner meeting. The Valley Harmonizers male chorus from Renfrew entertained us with their talents after dinner. The audience was invited to sing a long for a few songs.
Secretarial Report – Val Trotter
Calabogie 55+ Club meets monthly and typically at the home of one of the executives. In 2024, the executive met ten (10) times between January through to the end of October 2024. These meetings are typically held the week after our monthly dinner meetings to review the dinner meeting per se as well as to review any action items, discuss future dinner meetings and scheduled events, etc. Our last meeting in 2024 was held on Thursday, October 31st. This was the last official meeting that the 2024 executive participated in as Denise, Robert, Lori and myself (Val) have all since retired from the club executive, leaving the executive in the capable hands of the newly formed 2025 executive.
Bogie Lights – Jean Libbey
Bogie Lights was held on Nov 15th at 6:30 pm at Heritage Point. It was a wonderful evening with approximately 120 people in attendance. We sang Christmas Carols led by Peggy Williams and Alison Fay, roasted marshmallows, enjoyed hot chocolate & apple cider and home-made cookies donated by club members. The Christmas tree Tripods were erected by club members using poles supplied by Dan Trotter attached to “T” bars from Marilyn Warnock. Lights were stung around them creating a small forest. Thank you to all who helped make this a great community event.
Christmas Float – Lorna Johnston
Our theme for this year’s float was ‘Elf on the Shelf’. Many members of our club participated in making this event successful and fun – from designing and constructing the props, painting, making costumes, packaging candy, being on the float, and assembling and disassembling the float. Thanks as always to Val and Dan Trotter who prepare the platform and space to decorate the float. Also, a Thank You to Calabogie Highlands for providing us with a flatbed and driver. (Aside from Sue – thanks to Lorna and Jean who purchased tights and sewed costumes for the elves.)
Barnett Gardens – Joanne Levitsky and Gale McRae
Over the past few months I have consulted with landscaping companies, a native plant expert and the municipality. I aimed high, and applied for a hefty grant that would have allowed a major overhaul.
The garden looked beautiful this year and was full of flowers, some of which were cut to decorate Barnet Cottage for our summer dinner meetings. While it was extremely beautiful, closer examination revealed that a lot of grass, weeds, and trees were slowly invading the space. Over the growing season, we tried to get out each month and spend an hour or so maintaining it, but it was impossible to do it all.
Over the past few months Gale consulted with landscaping companies, a native plant expert and the municipality. When OPG awarded us a $5,000 grant toward the garden, it was decided that spending a good portion on hiring someone to do the bulk of the heavy renovation would be a wise investment. Fortunately for us, this work was completed in the fall. Many of the invasive plants were removed, mulch was put down, the stones of the path through the garden were raised, and a stone edging was installed. In March, I will be ordering approximately 100 native plants. We will be seeking help in May to plant them, and also assistance with watering them over the dry months of summer and fall. A big thanks to everyone who helped out last season, and hopefully, there will be many more volunteers this year as the garden will be much easier to work in now. (Aside from Sue: Thanks to Gale for the hours spent to apply for this grant)
Nine and Dine – Sue Beaton
We had a very successful nine and dine program. We golfed and dined at Calabogie Highlands, every month, May to September with no rainouts. The number of participants varied between 25 and 42. I understand that it isn’t always helpful to have the golf run the same week as the 55 plus dinner and I will continue to try not to have that happen, but there are other groups that use the course which effects the course availability. Looking forward to next year.
Bowling – Rick Copely and Debbie Murphy
Bowling Annual Report for 2024 A bowling league runs from September to May on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 AM to around noon at the Opeongo Bowling Alley in Renfrew. It is currently organized by Club 55+ member Rick Copely. Over the past few years, as members of Club 55+ dropped out, non-members were recruited by word-of-mouth. Currently, 10 club members are joined by bowlers from anywhere between Petawawa and Arnprior. The league is always on the lookout for participants, and because it is a non-competitive, fun league, beginners are welcomed. While all of the teams have a full roster and there is a list of spare bowlers, there are still spots available most, if not all weeks. If you have any questions, Dan Ventresca will be the liaison between Club 55+ and the bowling league going forward in 2025.
Newsletter – Val Trotter
During 2024, a total of four (4) newsletters were issued and sent to club members. These quarterly newsletters were issued in the Spring (March), Summer (July), Fall (September), and Winter months (December). In addition to being emailed to club members, the newsletters were also posted on our Calabogie 55+ club website. They are removed after a few months or when a newer newsletter is issued.
Web Site – Val Trotter/Rick Brown
Our web site has been maintained by Rick Brown on a “Weebly” Website which has not provided technical support or updated band with for several years. Because of the increased size of documents and photos, it has been challenging to manage the amount that could be uploaded to the site. Val sent updates to Rick who made changes promptly. Dave Abraham volunteered to design and develop a new website and maintain it at no charge. There will be a setup fee and annual fees for the new platform. A survey was conducted in December. The results gave the Executive agreement to have a new website developed and maintained and to budget for the necessary fees. The design and development process will start in January with a proposed start day in March/April. Thanks to Rick for his work in the last few years and his continuation as photographer.
Senior Games – Denise Lavallée /Val Trotter/ Lori Armour
club members participated in were: Prediction and Nordic Walking (May), Golf at Whitetail Golf Course (May), Bowling at the Renfrew Bowling Alley (May) and Curling (October) at the Renfrew Curling Club. There were other games organized by the Renfrew County Games committee during 2024, but Calabogie 55+ club members did not participate in them this past year. Winners from the district games are then encouraged to play in either the Ontario provincial games or in the Canada games. This year, Lori Armour participated in the Canada games (held in Quebec City.)
Mixed Summer Bridge -Val Trotter
Mixed Summer Bridge returned for the warmer months in 2024. We began our season following the wrapping up of the Valley Community Bridge in April. In 2023 our monthly mixed bridge was introduced at the Barnet Cottage and we continued doing so in 2024. The start of the season began on Tuesday, May 14th and continued for the next four months until September. In addition to the 14th May, the other dates were June 11th, July 16th, August 13th and September 17th. As we do not hold a liquor license for these events, players were reminded to bring their own non-alcoholic beverage for their afternoon of cards. Snacks and often coffee and tea for the cooler days, were also provided. The cost for these afternoons continued at $2 pp. The men took the coveted first place at each monthly game (sigh). Members and friends will be invited back in 2025 to play bridge during these five months at Barnet Cottage. The club recently purchased new bridge tables that will be available for our bridge afternoons as they will be stored at the cottage, thus minimizing the need for members to bring their own tables, unless of course, we manage to attract more than five tables. As in the past, times will continue to be from 1:30 pm to approximately 4:30 pm.
Keep in Touch – Jane Benoit
Jane sent out 13 cards to the membership this year. Two addition cards were sent bringing the total to fifteen.
Christmas Dinner Dance – Jean Libbey
Our Christmas Party was held on December 7th starting at 5:30 pm. A delicious Christmas Dinner catered by Charbonneau’s was enjoyed by all in attendance. Our thanks goes to the Calabogie Lions Club members who ran the bar for the party. Members ate, danced to the music supplied by Red Rock Music and had a great time.
